Pillows and Porches

Pillows and Porches

It has been sunny and wonderfully warm here in Seattle this week. And that is lovely. But also very stressful. Because it has kicked my brain into overdrive in regards to our disastrous swamp land of a yard and porch. I am repainting/resurfacing the porch this week and it is just one of those projects that can snowball in a split second into something too expensive and way too time consuming. Basically our deck/porch has very unattractive posts and railings that make the whole thing look like hot glued popsicle sticks. And while I want to spend zero dollars, I also hate the whole thing as-is. Which is why I can often be found frozen staring out at the window thinking "Ooo! I got it what if... No. Can't do that. Because this reason..... oh! What about, nope. Not that. Reign it in." etc etc until I end up just hitting my head against said porch railing. One thought I had was to decorate the heck out of it so you'd never see the actual structure anyway. Which lead to the great outdoor pillow hunt of 2014. However, I was super disappointed with the options I could find. I don't know what it is, but for some reason outdoor fabrics have stopped evolving. So while bloggers scramble to track the ever-shifting interior fabric trends, when summer comes around you are offered some altered paisley print, grandma's hibiscus or a cabana stripe in beige or off-beige. So I was all prepped to write an entire blog post dedicated to the lack of outdoor pillows, but then I came across this site. It is similar to Spoonflower, in that artists upload their designs or prints and the site prints them on all manner of objects. But most excitingly outdoor pillow covers! What?! Yes!

And oh man, is there some super obscure stuff in there. Because there are countless artists sharing their work, you can find anything your heart desires. Frozen Alphonse Mucha style? You got it. Elvis as Napoleonic officer? Sure. Otters holding hands? But of course. So to distract myself from the terror outside my door I decided to virtually set a seat on my porch for some of my ladies. Sisters, mama, niece, friends. All invited to sip mint juleps in next to me with a pillow that is just their style... Well, virtually for now, and one day when I stop banging my head, for reals.

Ok... well. I am going to go paint my porch now... Don't ask questions. I don't even know. You and I can ponder the finished product together :-)
