The "before party"
"Before party"? Say what now? Trust me, its an amazing party idea. Let me explain.
Ansel and I bought our house with the desire and intention to renovate. We are so excited to have found a great house to do just that. Right off the bat, there are many things on the to do list that I want to get done before we settle in. Which means that the house wouldn't be "ready" for a party anytime soon. But that is no fun. I don't want to wait to celebrate this life milestone with our friends. This house isn't going to be "done" for a long time. So I decided to throw a housewarming party before the big after. Get it? Yay!
We opened our doors to our Seattle friends and family just two days after we officially owned the house. We didn't touch a thing. Not the ugly curtains, not the random stuff left in the basement, not the bad hotel art in the kitchen. Nothing. We only brought in our own treats to serve and some speakers and called it a party.
Well ok, there was one more thing.
I am sort of the queen of party activities. At our valentines party we had a "who said what nice thing about their love" guessing game and card making. All my birthdays have involved mandatory sentimental crafts. When living in the dorms in college, I hosted holiday ornament making out of my shared 10x10 jail cell room. Even simple backyard bbqs have to have a few rounds of personality quizzes or "would you rather". So I couldn't just host a simple open house, especially since we hand't done any work on the house yet! So I made a "vote for your fave remodeling" idea posting in every room.
I was pretty sure everyone would roll their eyes but politely play along. But actually it was a big hit and it seemed folks really got into it. It was sort of like an interactive tour. Trust me guys, some times I do have good ideas!
This morning Ansel and I went back to take pictures, and let me tell you something, it was the best feeling to walk into our new house filled with a hundred little notes from our friends. It was such a warm magical thing. I thought this activity would be a fun bit at our open house but it turns out it was the perfect christening to our new home.
Ready for pictures? Ready to play along! Welcome to the BEFORE PARTY!
Kitchen Question 1 read: A library ladder in the kitchen would be so amazing right? Vote Yes or No. (This one got pretty heated)
Kitchen Question 2 read: On our one day white cabinets, which knob should we use? Metal pull, glass, or latch.
Dining Room Question read: We need a dining table! Where do you want to sit when you come over for dinner? Industrial, traditional or farm house.
Office Question read: Window covering opinions? Floor to ceiling curtains, colorful shades, or woven shades and curtains.
(whoops! forgot to get a photo of this one! will post it soon!)
Bedroom Question read: Should Ansel approve Sarah’s desire for blush walls? (our realtor knew this one in advance and when she came to the open house put up big paint chips she had picked out! How sweet is that?)
Bathroom Question read: Ewww, this bathroom is gross and awkward. How should we re-envision the walls? High wainscoting, tile, or board and batten.
And then apparently I did not offer enough opportunity for folks to weigh in and they went rogue! haha. It was so great though, I loved that people really engaged with us and our home. (BTW, Ansel works in the tech industry and I am not showing you all the tech related post-its, but trust me there were plenty!)
A Sampling of Voters Gone Rouge
Then this happened! One of Ansel's coworkers drives this baby around town. We all got a inside tour. LOVE it!
We laughed, we danced, we ate we drank, and we got silly with stickies. It was the best "before party" in history!
And then less than 24 hours later... Some DEMO!!!!
Stay tuned for a full home tour and so much more.
